Resumes are First Impressions

Your resume is a very important tool when it comes to finding a job. The potential employer will be going through a pile of resumes. You want yours to stick out so that you can get the interview. Below are some tips and links to help you with your resume - online and off.

Paper Resumes

  • Use bulleted items rather than long paragraphs to keep the resume easy to read
  • Try to keep the resume to one page
  • Don't get fancy - simple and easy to read is best
  • Use white colored paper
  • Include all relevant information and don't lie
  • It is wise to have several different versions of your resume that highlights different strengths - i.e. one for sales positions, one for management positions, etc.
  • White space is important - make sure you have adequate margins and white space on your resume
  • Fonts - don't go smaller than 10 point or use hard to read fonts. Stick with easy to read fonts like Times New Roman or Verdana

    Online Resumes

  • While having a resume available as a webpage is nice, you should also have a Word or PDF version you can email or post to job sites
  • Some job sites allow you to fill out a form for an online resume. You should take the time to fill these out and keep them current if you're looking for a job.
